How To Migrate Windows7 To Solid State Drive

You have recently bought a SSD and have been looking for a chance to make this drive your main drive but have been hesitating to do so because you don’t want to lose your favorite applications and other important data.

Things Needed Before Migration:

You must have heard from many people or read on the net that doing a fresh install is always the best option as migrating a installation on a fresh disk can cause problems. But migration saves a lot of time and once the migration is completed you can start your work on the windows immediately.

So before we start on the process of migration there are some things that you need to do:

• Backup your data: backup all your important data before you start with the migration process. Make sure that the data you backup is preferably not connected to your computer.
• Defraggler and CCleaner: these free utilities will help you to clean your windows of all the junk files so that the clone of your windows is error free as possible.
• Clonezilla or EaseUS Partition Maneger: you can use either of the application as they will help you to manage your partition and data on them.
• SSD on your computer
• Windows 7 system repair disk: this is a very handy tool and its good to keep it just in case your master boot record is wiped off accidentally. You can restore the master boot in a matter of seconds with the repair disk.
• Update your SSD firmware: SSD are fairly new technology and after their release many company have released new firmware for them which enhance their performance and also improve their efficiency. Each SSD drive has its own firmware upgrade process so make sure to visit the website of your drive and read on how to update the firmware.

Align The Sectors On Your SSD:

1. Open start menu and click on all programs and then accessories.
2. Right click on command prompt and select run as administrator.
3. Once the command prompt has opened enter the following commands very carefully as you see them:

Diskpart

List disk

Select disk n (n is the SSD’s number as provided by the previous command)

Create partition primary align=1024

Active

Exit

After you have entered the above commands your SSD is properly aligned and is ready for transfer of the clone.

Cloning To Your SSD:

1. If your SSD is smaller than the system partition that your cloning then you need to use EaseUS Partition Master
2. With this free utility you can clone 200Gb partition with 80GB of data on a 120Gb SSD easily.
3. Run EaseUS Partition Master and select your current OS disk
4. Then select copy partition from left hand side of the window which will open a prompt asking you which disk to copy.
5. Make sure you have selected the OS partition before pressing next.
6. Go through the wizard and once you’re done click finish your PC will restart and the cloning process will start.
7. Once the cloning processes have completed shut down your PC and unplug your original HDD.
8. Power on and you may need to use the windows recovery cd to boot and make sure that your SDD is plugged in.
9. Once boot is completed you would have booted from the SSD.

You have successfully now cloned your entire windows installation with all your applications on to the SSD and have saved hours which you would have otherwise spend on reinstalling windows and all the applications.
