The iPhone 5 uses Nano Sim

Nothing was specified abut the Nano Sim in the iPhone 5 Launch keynote. But its officially confirmed that Apple iPhone 5 will be using Nano Sim only.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) unveiled the Apple designed nano-SIM format back in June. Nano Sim is 40 percent smaller than the current micro-SIM format and measures just 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high, and 0.67mm thick.

ETSI mentioned in press release at the time of nano-SIM announcement that “Today’s SIM card designs take up a significant amount of space inside a mobile device. This space is more and more valuable in today’s handsets which deliver an ever increasing number of features”

This new version of sim card is not compatible with the earlier devices since its approximately 40% smaller than the Micro Sim card we find in Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Similarly, the iPhone 5 will not be able to use microsim. Apple is the first company to use Nanosim. So mobile operators must start manufacturing Nano Sim if they want to have a place in this new iPhone.

Vodafone is providing Nano Sim cards quite before the launch of the Apple iPhone 5. And its said that other telecom providers are not far behind. They have already started producing Nano Sim cards considering the expected increase in demand with iPhone 5 sales.
