How To Keep Windows 7 Smooth And Fast

Getting annoyed about frequent slowing down of your Windows 7 PC? Even the boot times seem to have increased and you have to wait a while before the desktop is ready to be used? You maybe baffled with all this problems even though you must be thinking that I have decent specification that wouldn’t allow my windows to crawl like at a snails place. Well by the time you’re done implementing the tips and guides from this article your Windows 7 PC should have considerably speeded up.

Microsoft Windows 7

1. Reduce Startup Programs:

Most of the programs that we install always gives us a option that whether it should start up when the Windows 7 starts or not but majority of programs don’t give this feature and are always there from the moment windows boots up. The processing time is increased which is divided into starting up those programs and booting up windows.

To find out which programs are starting during windows startup and to disable them is done through “MSCONFIG.EXE” this feature can be accessed in Windows 7 by typing MSCONFIG in the run dialog box and when the window launches go to startup and disable the unnecessary programs. That should decrease your boot time.

2. Reduce Icons:

Many of us like to have shortcuts on our desktop because we like to have all our programs that we have ever installed right in front of us for ease of access but what we don’t realize that this shortcuts need to be associated to their parent program so that they can launched.

When Windows 7 is being booted up the shortcut association occurs at that time and more shortcuts we have on our desktop more is the time taken because Windows has to search the hard drive for those programs and re-create the association. So its better to have no shortcuts or minimum number of shortcuts to your most used programs and applications. Also this leads to a less clustered desktop maintaining a clean and tidy view to your desktop wallpaper.

3. Defragment Hard Disk:

Whenever we imagine hard disk we get the picture of a file storage in our minds where the applications and programs are nicely ordered and kept in order but sadly this is not the case. Any programs or application that we install their bits and pieces are scattered throughout the hard disk there is no neat and orderly system.

Defragmentation allows us to create this orderly pattern and keeping all the pieces of the programs together. The advantage of this is that the read times are reduced leading to faster response as the files are grouped together so it’s easy to access. It is advised to carry out defragmentation every 3 to 6months.

4. Remove Dead Association:

Some of the applications that we uninstall are never completely removed some of their registry information or shortcuts remain in the hard drive and when such kind of information is left behind it eats up read write time and also hogs the processing time because windows tries to find out who it was associated with. There are many free applications that will do the job of removing these dead associations thus speeding up your boot time and improving performance of your laptop or desktop.

One of the best program that combines all these abilities together is TUNE UP UTILITIES which I had the pleasure to use from many years. It has the option:

  • To remove any startup programs.
  • Thoroughly defragment disk with some additional options to improve performance that is not available on windows defragmenting program.
  • Removing dead association at a click of a button.

So these are some of the basic tips for improving your startup time and speeding up performance of your machine. Now you wont have to wait long for your browser to launch and load those YouTube videos anymore.
