How To Fix Chromatic Aberrations Using Adobe Photoshop

You are an avid photographer taking pictures moments as they occur or you travel to different places and capture some of the breath taking sceneries which are very rare.

Once you come back and view them on your PC monitor your surprised because the picture has lost some of the detail and also there isn’t any accurate color representation of the image. This happens due to the chromatic aberration which shifts the color of the image as the light passes through the lens.

Fix Chromatic Aberrations

Although modern lens systems are equipped in such a way to prevent chromatic aberration but they still occur because sometimes the RGB color is incorrectly combined or there was distortion in image processing which resulted in loss of quality and deterioration of image.

Fortunately there is a way to fix this and in this guide we will outline the steps that you can use to fix chromatic aberration using adobe photoshop.

Fix Chromatic Aberrations

  1. Open the image in adobe photoshop and create a copy of the image on which you are going to work
  2. Begin with adjusting the green channel first and try to adjust it with the red channel. So select green channel while making sure that blue channel is switched off.
  3. After selecting green channel press Ctrl + A to select all and press Ctrl + T to perform a free transform on the green channel
  4. Be careful when you are doing the transformation and make sure that the channel fits the outside edges.
  5. After you are done press Enter and then press Ctrl + D to get rid of marquee.
  6. Now turn off the green channel and turn on the blue channel and perform similar adjustment as outlined in step 3 and step 4
  7. When you return to the combined RGB channel you will notice that most of the aberration has been repaired. But there are still some parts that are blurry and some distortions remain.

Repairing The Blurs

  1. Create a copy of the layer that you have just tweaked
  2. Now select green channel and nudge it to fit the areas in the focal point.
  3. You need to select with all with Ctrl + A to nudge the image into the green channel.
  4. Repeat the process for blue channel as well and making sure that only focal point is being nudged.
  5. Use your brush tool to blend and mask the areas outside your focal point.
  6. After you are done with masking, now group the two copies of the image and create a layer mask for your group. You can use it to revert any areas you care to the original image
  7. Now make a small crop to remove the edges that were affected by the channels that you have transformed.
  8. You can repeat this process for all the areas of blurring and fixing aberrations as many times as you need until no blurring or aberrations remain.

  1. Chromatic Abberation says:
