Aakash 2 Launching Very Soon

The government sponsored Aakash educational tablet has been much delayed over last two years or more, and now it seems the wait is being wrapped up very soon.

Once again the launching issue is in news, but this time the news is sweet. An official involved with the Aakash project said from September onwards they will be testing it.

It is also learned that the production of Aakash tablet would start by November. In the first phase the government will distribute one lakh Aakash tablets among university students. Government expects the distribution to start early next year.

Recently the Union Minister of Human Resources Kapil Sibal said the tablet will be launched very soon. He was addressing the first convocation of BITS Hyderabad.

This is Aakash 2 after the failure of first-generation Aakash. It will have updated specifications such as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, 800MHz processor, 256MB RAM, 2GB built-in storage, GPRS, WiFi, 3200 mAh battery and voice-calling capabilities. The tablet is to sport 7-inch capacitive touchscreen.

The Aakash 2 project is handled by Datawind and IIT-Bombay. It would cost around Rs 1200 for students after a 50% subsidies by the Indian government.
